Private John Buckham

Private John Buckham, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action  during the Battle of the Somme on 25th September 1916 aged 20. He had been born in Longformacus and was the son of Adam and Elizabeth Buckham of Rawburn Cottage, Longformacus and is buried in Serre Road No, 2 Cemetery, Serre, France. When he enlisted he was living with his Grandmother in Greenlaw, Berwickshire. He fell in the successful attack on Morval where 700 prisoners were taken together with 5 Machine Guns. Casualties were 5 Officers and 165 Other Ranks. The photograph shows the troops moving up to attack Morval and the state of the ground during the autumn rains.
