Lance Corporal James Ireland

Lance Corporal James Ireland, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France, aged 21, on the 18th September 1918 during the ” Advance to Victory”. He had been born in Dumfriesshire in 1897 and was the son of Margaret ( Ireland ) Elliot, Langton, Duns. He is buried in Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, France. It seems that he originally enlisted in the 1st/4th K.O.S.B before being transferred to the 2nd Battalion. He fell in the attack on ” African Trench” which cost the Battalion dear especially in Officers with 2 killed and 5 wounded. The photographs show Allied troops advancing during the final 100 days of the War.
