Private James Turnbull

Private James Turnbull, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died of wounds in Palestine on 6th April 1917, aged 20. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Turnbull of Kerchesters, Kelso and is buried Deir el Belah War Cemetery, Palestine. At that time the Battalion was holding an outpost line near Gaza and Private Turnbull was mortally wounded by a stray shell. The same shell killed Private James Dickson of Kelso. He had been born in Greenlaw and had lived and enlisted in Jedburgh. The photographs show the Borderers in Palestine in 1917. The three soldiers pictured all played football for Coldstream F.C.
