Lance Corporal James Ballantyne

Lance Corporal James Ballantyne, 10th ( Service ) Battalion, Cameronians ( Scottish Rifles ). He died in Belgium, aged 22, on 17th August 1917 of wounds received in action during the Third Battle of Ypres. He was the son of Edward and Beatrice Ballantyne of Clerklands, Lilliesleaf. and is buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No. 3, Flanders, Belgium. The photographs show troops during the early stages of the battle. The colour photo shows the impressive Memorial raised to the men of the 9th and 15th (Scottish Divisions) who fell during the Battle. 10th Cameronians were part of the 15th (Scottish) Division. It was erected on Frezenberg Ridge near the village of Zonnebeke in the Ypres Salient and it was unveiled in August 2007. A plaque in both Gaelic and English is affixed to the front of the Memorial and on it is inscribed a quote from the Declaration of Arbroath.
