Sergeant James Conacher

Sergeant James Conacher, 1st/4th ( Territorial, City of Dundee ) Battalion, Black Watch. He was killed in France on 14th July 1916, aged 30 during the Battle of the Somme. He had been born in Kiltearn, Rossshire and was the son Mungo and Helen Keir Conacher of Evertown, Canonbie. He had been brought up in Castleton where his father was a gamekeeper and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. He had enlisted originally in the 8th Black Watch but at some time was transferred to the 1st/4th Battalion. The photographs show Scottish troops on the Somme.
