Private William Torrie

Private William Graham Torrie, 48th Battalion, Australian Infantry. He was killed in action in France on 6th August 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, aged 27. He was born in Lauder and was the son of the late William and Mary Torrie of Lauder and is buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.2, Somme, France.  He and his brother Bertram were farming in Western Australia when they enlisted in December 1915. The photographs show a recently captured trench on the Somme with the chalk soil of the Region very much in evidence and troops during the Battle.
