Private William Middlemiss

Private William Middlemiss, 1st/9th (Highland) Battalion, Royal Scots (The Dandy Ninth). He died of wounds in France, aged 20, on 5th December 1917 sustained in repelling an enemy raid on Battalion trenches in the Moeuvres sector and is buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.  He had been born in Greenlaw and was the son of Margaret and the late James Middlemiss. He died in the 29th Casualty Clearing Station at Grevilliers. The Battalion was part of the 51st(Highland) Division and after the War an impressive Memorial was raised in commemoration. It was erected in Newfoundland Park on the Somme where on the 13th November 1916 the Division had stormed the strong German positions at Beaumont Hamel.
