Private John Stuart, Depot, 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He died on Service on the 26th February 1917 and is buried in Lauder Cemetery. He was the son of Robert Stuart who had been a gardener at Thirlestane Castle. John before the war had also been a gardener but at Floors Castle, Kelso working for the Duke of Roxburgh. He had enlisted in the 7th Battalion Seaforths in September 1914 and had been wounded at the Battle of Loos in September 1915. He was then transferred in the 2nd Battalion Seaforths and here he had contracted Enteric Fever whilst in France. He was invalided home to the War Hospital in Croyden where he died from Pneumonia.
