Private James Welsh

Private James Welsh, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Palestine on 19th April 1917 during the Second Battle of Gaza, aged 27. He had been born in Selkirk and was the son of John and Allison Welsh of Blainslie, Lauder and is buried in the Gaza War Cemetery, Gaza, Palestine. He fell in the attack on the Turkish positions on “Outpost Hill” which cost the Battalion dearly. Despite great heroics the position which had been captured could not be held due to the heavy casualties and a shortage of ammunition. 6 Officers and 44 Other Ranks were killed with 9 Officers and 152 Other Ranks wounded.
