Flight Sergeant James Mercer

Flight Sergeant James Mercer, Air Gunner, 624 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer reserve He was killed on an Air Operation on 26th June 1944 age 20. He had been born in Ledgerwood and was the son of Robert and Agnes Mercer of Whitslaid, Lauder and  he and his fellow crew members are buried in Lamastre Protestant Cemetery, France. 624 was a Special duties Squadron flying Handley Page Halifaxes  and specialised in dropping agents and supplies into German occupied Territories. He had been a member of the Lauder Home Guard Detachment before joining the R.A.F. in June 1943. He was lost on only his second operation.
