Sapper George Halliday

Sapper George Halliday, Royal Engineers. ( However on C.WG.C. site his Regiment is given as the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers ) He was killed in action in France during the Battle of Arras on 13th April 1917, aged 37. He had been born in Morebattle to William and Elizabeth Halliday and was the husband of Janet Renton of High Street, Lauder.  Before enlisting he had been employed as a mason in Lauder. He and is buried in Tank Cemetery, Guemappe, Arras, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” Rest In Peace “. The artist’s illustration depicts the nature of the fighting during the Battle and the photograph shows British troops accompanied by a tank in a captured village near Arras. (He is also commemorated on the Morebattle Memorial where his Regiment is given as the South Wales Borderers. It is probable that he began his Service in the Royal Engineers and was later transferred into the S.W.B).
