Sergeant William Fleming

Sergeant William Fleming, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was lost on an Air Operation, aged 34, over Germany  during the ” Battle of Berlin “on 2nd January 1944 with 460 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force. He had been born in Ladykirk and was  the son of Daniel and Mary Fleming of Ladykirkshiels, Ladykirk, Berwickshire and is buried in the Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery. 460 Squadron flew the Avro Lancaster Mark 111 from R.A.F. Binbrook and flew the most sorties of any Australian Squadron and lost 181 aircraft during the War.  Their aircraft, JB606 AR-H, crashed at Muckendorf with no survivors.  Sgt Fleming and P/O H. Bennett were the only non Australians in the crew.
