Private David McNicholl, 1st/7th Territorial ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in Belgium by a sniper on the 4th February 1916, aged 24. He had been born in Eassie & Neway, Forfarshire and was the eldest son of James and Annie McNicholl of Forfarshire. By 1914 David was living in Belford and was working on the Haggerston Estate near Berwick-upon-Tweed. From there he enlisted early in the War in Belford going to the Continent with the Battalion on the 20th April 1915. Between 3rd and 6th February the Battalion were in support positions near Armagh Wood and suffered 6 Other Ranks killed and ii wounded. On 4th February he was part of a carrying party bringing rations to the front lines. when they became exposed to sniper fire. Five men were hit with David being killed outright. He is buried in Maple Copse Cemetery, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.
