Corporal James Stawart, “C” Coy. 21st Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He was killed in action in France on 17th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, aged 21. He was the son of the late Thomas Stawart of Howtel, Mindrum, Cornhill-on-Tweed and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. The photograph shows a recently captured trench on the Somme with the chalk soil of the Region very evident.
