Private George McGregor

Private George McGregor, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. He was killed in action on 31st July 1917, aged 27 on the opening day of the Battle of Third Ypres and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. On that day the Battalion captured all its objectives but suffered heavy casualties. 2 Officers and 55 Other Ranks were killed and 6 Officers and 207 Other Ranks were wounded. After consolidating their gains the Battalion was withdrawn into reserve at Roussol Farm. He was the son of Mr and Mrs T. McGregor of East Kirknewton and late of Primside Mill, Yetholm. Before the war he had been employed by Mr Davidson, a rabbit catcher, of Yetholm and had enlisted in December 1915.
