Sergeant Robert John Charters, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was an Air Gunner and was lost on an Air Operation to Berlin with 106 Squadron R.A.F. on 30th January 1944, aged 23. He was the son of Robert and Christina Charters of Kelso and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. 106 Squadron at that time flew the Avro Lancaster with 5 Group Bomber Command from R.A.F “Metheringham”, Lincolnshire. The Lancaster ( ND336 ZM-Q ) went down in the North Sea and on March 5th 1944 the body of the pilot P/O. Kirland, R.A.A.F. was washed ashore on Vlieland in the Dutch Friesian Islands. He was buried in the local cemetery.
