Private John Hewitson, “C” Coy.1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 2nd October 1918, aged 37 during the ” Advance to Victory “. He was the son of Mrs Hewitson and the late John of Southfield, Kelso and is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, Harcourt, France. He fell in a Company attack under Lt. Fair from Duns on an attempt to silence an enemy machine gun position. The lieutenant was killed and the attack was broken up by enemy shelling. The photographs show Allied troops advancing after the retreating German Army.
