Private Christopher Young

Private Christopher Young, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died in a military hospital in Egypt, aged 23, on 23rd April 1917 of wounds received in action during the Second Battle of Gaza and is buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.  He was the son of Christopher and Sarah Young of Stow. He was wounded during the attack on the Turkish redoubt on.” Outpost Hill” on the 19th April. The attack gallantly led by Major Walter Forrest of Kelso captured the position and bravely held it until heavy casualties, a shortage of ammunition, enfilading machine gun fire and fierce Turkish counter attacks forced a retirement. Casualties were 6 Officers and 44 Other Ranks killed and 9 Officers and 152 Other Ranks wounded. ) Major Forrest was mortally wounded on the parapet of the redoubt.
