Sergeant Thomas Hall, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in Normandy, France, aged 36, on the 28th June 1944 during the Normandy Campaign. He had been born in Yetholm, Roxburghshire and was the son of William and Janet Hall of Millheugh, Oxnam and the husband of Vivian Hall of Kelvingrove, Glasgow. He had been a Regular with the Border Regiment before the War and joined the K.O.S.B on the outbreak of War going to France with the B.E.F. in 1939. After a fighting rearguard the Battalion was evacuated from Dunkirk on the night of 31st May 1940. For his actions here he was Mentioned in Despatches. The Battalion returned to France on the 6th June 1944 landing on Queen Beach and took part in the severe fighting around Caen. On the 28th the Battalion was in Brigade Reserve but suffered casualties from shelling. One of these was Sergeant Hall. He is buried in La Deliverande War Cemetery, Douvres, Calvados, France where his headstone is inscribed ” Dearly beloved”. The photos show Scottish troops in Normandy.
