Lieutenant Thomas Halliburton

Lieutenant Colledge Halliburton, 9th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. He was killed in action in Normandy, France, aged 24, on the 7th June 1944 on the day after D-Day. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of the late Thomas and Helen Halliburton of upper Brae Villa, Jedburgh. he had been educated at Jedburgh Grammar School and Daniel Stewart’s College, Edinburgh before beginning legal training in the Town Clerk’s Office in Jedburgh. he enlisted in April 1940 and was commissioned into the Kings Own Scottish Borderers in May 1941. In mAy 1943 he transferred to the Parachute Regiment and was commanding 10 Platoon of “B” Coy. when they dropped into Normandy on 6th June 1944. Although widely scattered the German gun battery at Merville was captured and moved forward to the village of Le Plein where further heavy fighting took place against strong German positions. It was here that Lieutenant Halliburton fell. He is buried in Ranville Churchyard, Calvados, France. ( Photo of Lieutenant Halliburton is courtesy of J. D. Smith ).
