Lance Sergeant Robert Oliver

Lance Sergeant Robert Kerr Oliver, 6th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers.  He died from wounds in Belgium, aged 24, on the 23rd September 1917. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of Thomas and Ellen Oliver of 71 Castlegate, Jedburgh. He had been educated at Jedburgh Grammar School before becoming a postman in November 1913. He enlisted in the 4th K.O.S.B in January 1915 but was posted to the 6th Battalion in France in June 1917. On the 21st September the Battalion was engaged on salvage and consolidation work on enemy trenches which had been captured the day before  near Hannebeke Wood and suffered some casualties from shelling. Lance Sergeant was badly wounded and died two days later in the 12th Casualty Clearing Station. He is buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium where his Headstone is inscribed ” Peace Perfect Peace”.
