Second Engineer Officer Michael Oliver, Merchant Navy. He was lost at sea, aged 50, on the 27th February 1941. He had been born in Hawick and was the son of William and Catherine Oliver and the husband of Agnes Oliver of 5 Stratheden Place, Jedburgh. He had served as a marine engineer during the Great War and on into the early 1930s before joining the North British Rayon Company as an engineer. He re joined the Merchant Navy in 1940 and served aboard the S.S. ” Empire Tiger”. The vessel was sailing independently from Halifax, Nova Scotia to the Clyde when she ran into a storm and was lost with no survivors. The Finnish steamer “Anja” went to her assistance but found only floating wreckage. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
