Private William Henderson

Private William Henderson, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He died from wounds in France, aged 18, during the Battle of the Somme.  He had been born in Melrose and was the son of Janet and the late James Henderson of Inchbonny, Jedburgh. He had been underage on enlistment and had landed with the 8th Battalion, Gordons in May 1915 but was wounded during the Battle of Loos in September. Upon recovery he seems to have been posted to the 1st Battalion. He is buried in Abbeyville Communal Cemetery, Somme, France where his headstone is inscribed ” Till The Day Breaks And The Shadows Flee Away” . His brother William also fell – see above ).
