Private Robert Balfour

Private Robert Brown Balfour, 238th Company machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 25, on the 20th September 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of George and Margaret Balfour of 15 High Street, Jedburgh. he had been employed in his father’s business when he enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry. he was then posted to the M.G.C. in France landing there in July 1917. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. By autumn 1917 the incessant shelling had destroyed the fragile Flanders drainage systems making the atrocious conditions of the battlefield all too obvious as can be seen from the photos.
