Private John Waldie

Private John Scott Robson Waldie, 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in France, aged 19, on the 9th May 1915 during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of William and Margaret Waldie of 1a Old Bondgate, Jedburgh. He had been employed as an apprentice blacksmith when he enlisted in August 1914 joining his Battalion in France in March 1915. He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France. The “Battle” was a complete failure with no ground gained and due to a weak bombardment and intense machine gun fire over 11,000 casualties were. suffered by the British Army. 1st Seaforths  who were part of the Dehra Dun Brigade in the 7th ( Meerut ) Division had 7 Officers and 131 Other Ranks killed and 10 Officers and 346 Other Ranks wounded.
