Private John Oliver

Private John Poulter Oliver, 7th ( Service ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 19, on the 1st October 1918 during the ” Advance to Victory”. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of Adam and Helen Oliver of Acton, London. Before moving to London he had been an apprentice gardener in London. He is buried in Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium where his headstone is inscribed ” A Warmer Heart Death Never Made Cold”. He fell in the capture of the village of Ledheghem which cost the Battalion 4 Officers and 19 Other Ranks killed and 4 Officers and 59 Other Ranks wounded. In addition 4 Other Ranks were posted missing. The photos show Allied troops advancing after vthe retreating German Army during the final 100 days of the War.
