Private John Brunton Dickson, 6th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in England, aged 20, by enemy action on the 18th November 1940. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of Richard and Bessie Dickson of 18 Castlegate, Jedburgh. Before enlisting he had been employed as an apprentice plumber in Jedburgh and had been a member of the Territorial K.O.S.B. The Battalion were in requisitioned accommodation known as ” Yates Retreat” in the village of Theydon Bois near Epping, Essex when it was struck by a German parachute mine dropped in a German air raid. 30 men were killed and many others injured. Two other Jedburgh men were amongst the dead, Privates Dobson and McGuire. see – below. He is buried in St. John’s Churchyard, Jedburgh.
