Private George Scott

Private George Laing Scott, 9th ( Service ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 20, on the 12th April 1918 during the German offensives on the River Lys. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of Thomas and Margaret Laing of 33 Canongate, Jedburgh. Before enlisting he had been employed in Jedburgh as a baker’s vanman. He is buried in Wytschaete Military Cemetery, Flanders, Jedburgh. It seems he was acting as a Company runner when he was killed by shellfire. This Battalion was the Pioneer Battalion for the 9th ( Scottish ) Division.
