Private George Cunningham, Army Catering Corps attd. Pioneer Corps. He died on Active Service in Sicily, aged 51, on the 13th August 1943. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Francis and Charlotte Cunningham and the husband of Florence Cunningham of 8 Bondgate Gardens, Jedburgh. During the Great War he had served with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers and before enlisting he had been employed by the North British Rayon Company in Jedburgh although just prior to the War he had worked in a bakery in Newtown St. Boswells. He died from malaria and he is buried in Catania War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy where his Headstone is inscribed “Lest We forget”.
