Private George Cairns

Private George Tully Cairns, 1st/4th ( Territorial, Queen’s Edinburgh Rifles, Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in France, aged 23, on the 27th August 1918 during the ” Advance to Victory”. He had been born in Morebattle, Roxburghshire and was the son of Thomas and Isabella cairns of Bonjedward and Boundaries, Jedburgh. His Brother also fell – see below. Before enlisting he had been employed as a seedsman in Jedburgh. He fell in the advance to Fontaine-les-Croiselles where some artillery pieces, many machine guns and 344 prisoners were taken. He is buried in H.A.C. Cemetery, Ecoust-St. Mein, Pas de Calais, France. The photos show allied troops advancing against the retreating German Army during the final 100 days of the War.
