Private George William Buchanan, 1st/5th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Cameronians. He died from wounds in France, aged 18, on the 26th January 1915 and is buried in Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension, France. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of Colour sergeant Thomas Buchanan and Janet Buchanan. He had been educated at Rothesay Academy and Shawlands Academy, Glasgow before attending the Royal Technical College to train as an engineer. He was living in Glasgow when he enlisted going to France with his Battalion in November 1914. Most of the Battalion casualties at this time were from snipers
