Private George Baillie

Private George Baillie, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France, aged 22, on the 3rd October 1918 during the ” Advance to Victory”. He had been born in Wilton, Hawick and was the son of Robert and Mary Baillie of 31 New Bongate, Jedburgh. He had joined the Battalion in Egypt in 1916 and had served in Palestine before the Battalion, as part of the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division, moved to France in April 1918 in order to help stem the German Spring Offensives. He is buried in Cambrai East Military Cemetery, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” His Banner Over Him Is Love”. He fell in the attempt to capture the German positions in Faubourg de Paris. In the face of intense artillery and machine gun fire the attack failed with heavy casualties of 150 including 4 Officers and 30 Other Ranks killed. This reduced the fighting strength of the Battalion to 350 All Ranks. The photos show the Allies advancing after the retreating German Army during the final 100 days of the War.
