Private Archibald Veitch

Private Archibald Veitch, Otago Regiment, New Zealand Infantry. He was killed in action at Gallipoli, aged 32, on the 6th August 1915. He had been born in jedburgh and was the son of John and Mary Ann Veitch of 65 Castlegate, Jedburgh and Roslyn, Dunedin. He had served his apprenticeship as a plumber in New Zealand before the family emigrated to New Zealand in 1913. He enlisted in Dunedin in October 1914 and after service in Egypt went to Gallipoli in April 1915 as part of the A.N.Z.A.C. Corps. He fell in the gallant attempt to capture the heights of Chunuk Bair. The heights were gained but an overwhelming Turkish counter attack pushed the New Zealanders off the spur and caused the Battalion heavily. He is commemorated on the Chunuk Bair ( New Zealand ) Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. His brother John also fell – see below. ( Photo of Private Veitch courtesy of J. D. Smith ).
