Lance Corporal William Turnbull, M.M.

Lance Corporal William Turnbull, M.M., 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died from wounds in France, aged 24, on the 3rd October 1918 during the ” Advance to Victory”. He had been born in Bowden, Roxburghshire and was the son of Andrew and Beatrice Turnbull of Mossburnford Farm, Jedburgh. He had been a ploughman at the farm when he enlisted in February 1917 He was initially posted to the 7th/8th Battalion before being transferred to the 2nd Battalion. He died in hospital from gas poisoning in No. 5 General Hospital in Rouen and is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. On the 30th September “A” Coy. and been hit by gas shells with 41 casualties including Lance Corporal Turnbull. He died before the official announcement of his Military Medal.
