Private Andrew Swanston, 2nd Battalion, Black Watch. He died from wounds in Mesopotamia, aged 22, on the 24th February 1917. He had been born in Peebles and was the son of Peter and Margaret Swanston of 5 Blackhills Close, Jedburgh. He had been employed in Allars Mill, Jedburgh when he enlisted in April 1916. He is buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq. It is likely he was wounded on the attack on the Turkish positions at Sanna-l-yat was part of the attempts to capture Kut-Al-Amara and Baghdad. The Turks were forced to retreat and Kut was captured the next day.
