Private Alexander Geddes Turnbull, 1st/5th ( Territorial City of Glasgow ) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was killed by shellfire in Palestine, aged 21, on the 11th July 1917. He had been born in Govan, Glasgow and was the son of David and Elizabeth Turnbull of Govan, Glasgow and the Grandson of Alexander Geddes of Jedburgh. He had been employed as a butcher before enlisting in November 1915 and joining his Battalion in Egypt in June 1916. He is buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Israel where his Headstone is inscribed ” A Secret Thought A Silent Tear Keep His Memory Ever Dear “. At that time the Battalion was in trenches near Gaza when it was shelled by the Turks. Private Turnbull was the only casualty.
