Marine Engineer Robert Hope

Marine Engineer Robert Hope, Mercantile Marine. He died at sea aboard the S.S,” Kashmir”, aged 39, on the 3rd October 1918. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of the late Robert and Margaret Hope of Jedburgh. ( His father had been the Bandmaster of the Jedforest Instrumental Band ). His ship had been transporting U.S. servicemen from New York to Liverpool and many of the troops and crew came down with the ” Spanish Flu” Many including Robert Hope died and were buried at sea. ( three days later the ship collided with another troopship the ” Otranto” which went aground on Islay with a great loss of life.
