Lieutenant John Macpherson

Lieutenant John Malcolm Macpherson, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died from disease in India, aged 29, and is buried there.  He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of Donald and Mary Macpherson of 76 Castlegate, Jedburgh.  He had been educated in Jedburgh and Boroughmuir School in Edinburgh before going up to Edinburgh University and graduating M.A. with Honours in English in 1913. He had been teaching in Montrose when he enlisted in the K.O.S.B. in August 1915. He was promoted Quarter Master Sergeant in May 1915 and landed on Gallipoli with the Battalion in June 1915. He was badly wounded during the ” Charge” at Achi Baba Nullah on the 12th July. His brother James was killed on that day ( see – above). He was commissioned in June 1916 and was again badly wounded at Gaza in April 1917. He was promoted to Lieutenant in December 1917 and went with the Battalion to France in April 1918 where he served until the end of the War. He then passed the examination for the Indian Civil Service in August 1920 and was appointed Assistant Magistrate at Monghyr in Bihar Province. He died from illness there on 22nd April 1922.
