Gunner John Hunter, 211 Battery, 71st Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery. He died on Active Service, aged 34, in Germany on the 29th April 1945. He had been born in Eckford, Roxburghshire and was the son of helen Hunter and the husband of Jane Hunter of 16 Canongate and Priorsmeadow, Jedburgh. Before enlisting he had been employed by the North British Rayon Company in Jedburgh. At the time of his death his Unit had been tasked with defending the crossings over the River Elbe over which the British 2nd Army were poised to take the port of Hamburg. He is buried in Hanover War Cemetery, Germany.
