Flight Sergeant George Stewart

Flight Sergeant George Ronald Stewart, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was lost on an Air Operation, aged 23, on the 13th March 1944. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of George and Eliza Stewart of Valleyview, Jedburgh. He had been educated at Jedburgh Grammar School and George Watson’s College in Edinburgh. He enlisted in 1939 and did his training in Canada, the U.S.A. and South Africa before joining 625 Squadron R.A.F. The Squadron flew the Avro Lancaster from R.A.F. Kelstern, Lincolnshire as part of 1 Group Bomber Command. He was lost on an Operation to Stuttgart when his aircraft crashed off the French coast with no survivors. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
