Corporal Alexander McDonald

Corporal Alexander Fleming McDonald, 8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in Tunisia, aged 24, on the 28th November 1942. He had been born in Bathgate and was the son of Sarah and the late Ellis McDonald and the husband of Mary McDonald of 9 Queen Mary’s Buildings, Jedburgh. He had worked as a joiner before enlisting and had met Mary whilst the Battalion was billeted in Jedburgh. The Battalion was part of the British force which took part in Operation Torch and on 28th November was advancing across Tunisia. when the Germans counter attacked forcing the Battalion to withdraw and consolidate. Casualties were heavy with 1 Officer and 20 Other Ranks killed and 4 Officers and 22 Other Ranks wounded. In addition 98 Other Ranks became prisoners. He is buried in Beja War Cemetery, Tunisia. the photos show British troops in Tunisia in November 1942.
