Private Robert Mabon

Private Robert Mabon, 12th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died  in the Salonica campaign  against the Bulgarians on 28th November 1916, aged 30. He was the son of Robert and Isabella Mabon of Hutton Hall Barns and is buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece. Before the war he had worked at Edington Mill and was known to be a strong man. Four days before war was declared, he had won a pillow fight contest at Chirnside. He enlisted in the Argylls in October 1914. The photograph shows the Battalion led by their pipers on the march at Salonica. It is interesting to note that the men are wearing slouch hats.
