Sergeant Arthur Bell

Sergeant Arthur Bell, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He served with 218 ( Gold Coast ) Squadron, R.A.F and was killed in a flying accident on 15th August 1941, aged 30. He had been born in North Shields and was the son of Arthur and Annie Bell of Hutton Mains, Hutton, Berwickshire and is buried in Hutton New Burial Ground , Hutton.( He is not commemorated on Hutton War Memorial and the stone in Hutton New Burial Ground gives his rank as Flying Officer ). He had volunteered in early 1941 and was killed when his Miles Magister basic trainer crashed near Ampthill, Bedfordshire. He was a keen oarsman and a member of the Tynemouth Amateur Rowing Club. He had worked as a butcher and poulterer in North Shields and Tynemouth with livestock supplied from the family farms at Broadmeadows and Hutton Mains farms, Hutton, Berwickshire.
