Sergeant Daniel Stewart, . M.M., 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action on 3rd May 1917 during the Battle of Arras and is buried in Drury Crucifix Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. The Battalion was involved in an attack near the village of Monchy but due to a weak ineffective bombardment and intense hostile machine gun fire could not breach the German wire and were forced to lie all day out in the scorching sun. The survivors regained British lines when darkness fell. Casualties were heavy but the Regimental History only mentions the 5 Officers who were killed. The photographs show troops accompanied by a tank in the main street of a captured village near Arras.
