Private John Mallen

Private John Mallen, 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards. He was killed in France on 12th March 1917 aged 37. He had been born at Rumbleton, Gordon and was the son of John and Margaret Mallen of Gordon and is buried in Sailly-Saillisel British Cemetery, Somme, France.  He had served his apprenticeship as a grocer in Greenlaw  before working in Edinburgh and then Glasgow  where he spent 14 years with Cooper & Co. From 8th-12th March the Battalion were holding “Palz”,” Potsdam” and “Switch” front line trenches and in this period they suffered 12 killed and 35 wounded from intermittent shelling.
