Sergeant Observer John Bell

Sergeant Observer John Bell, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed in action on the 31st December 1942 whilst flying Air Operations in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations and is commemorated on the Malta Memorial.  He had been born in Stitchill, Roxburghshire and was the son of Isabella and the late William Bell of Byrewalls, Gordon. He was a member of 40 Squadron R.A.F. which flew the Vickers Wellington Mark 111. At the time of his death the Squadron, which moved around regularly, was flying bombing raids on Tunisia and other targets around the Mediterranean from Luqa airfield on Malta..
