Sergeant George Henderson Smart, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died of wounds in a Bristol Hospital , aged , 23 on 13th August 1918. He had been born in Melrose to Thomas and Agnes Smart of Huntly House, Gattonside and is buried in Wairds Cemetery, Melrose. He had gone with the Battalion to Gallipoli in May 1915 where he had contracted dysentery and been evacuated back to England. Upon recovery he had rejoined his comrades in Palestine where he was a member of the Lewis Gun section. He was wounded in action in Palestine and again evacuated back to England to Beauforts War Hospital in Bristol where he died almost a year after being wounded.
