Private William Purves, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in Belgium on 13th April 1915 aged 19. He had been born in Fountainhall, Midlothian to the late James and Isabella Purves of Wester Housebyres, Gattonside and Sisterpath, Duns and is buried in La Laiterie Military Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium. Before enlisting in November 1914 he had been employed as a ploughman. He was the first Gattonside man to fall and sadly he was killed on his 19th birthday.
