Private Robert Heatlie

Private Robert Walter Heatlie, 1st/9th ( Highland) Battalion, Royal Scots. He died from wounds in France, aged 20, on the 27th November 1917 and is buried in St.Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, France. He had been born in Edinburgh and was the son of Walter and Margaret Heatlie of 19 Slateford Road, Edinburgh.. His father had worked as a tailor in Galashiels before moving to Edinburgh. He had enlisted in Edinburgh and joined his Battalion in France in December 1915. He died in the 42nd Stationary Hospital in Amiens. the 9th Royal Scots was part of the 51st (Highland) Division and after the War a very impressive Memorial was raised in commemoration. It was erected in Newfoundland Park on the Somme overlooking “Y” Ravine which was captured on the 13th November 1916 during the Battle of the Somme when the Division stormed the strong German positions in Beaumont Hamel.
