Private Alexander Howden

Private Alexander George Howden, 1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 28, on the 24th February 1915 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Janet and the late William Howden of 140 Galapark Road, Galashiels. After working as a coal miner he had enlisted as a Regular soldier in 1909 and served in Malta and India before returning to England and then going to France in December 1914.
